Howdy anglers,

We had a great morning here had some really good tuna fishing! There was some wahoo mixed in as well. The  grade of tuna is 12-40 lbs, a few really nice tuna. The wahoo were biting live bait and lures.

The wahoo bombs have seemed to be a little more effective on the wahoo over others.

We’re moving down the line a little to try another spot this afternoon.

We finished our day yesterday with some action! We caught yellowfin tuna up to 20 pounds, with the majority of the fish averaging 15 pounds. Live sardines were the bait of choice, with 30-40 pound line and a 2/0 J-hook. The tuna fishing was a lot of fun and a great way to finish an awesome day.

Friday/Saturday

Hello anglers: We tried hard today in several spots for yellowtail with not much result. We even tried some spots that haven’t been tried this season. However, we found great conditions with 70+ degree water and clean, but a lack of fish. We are headed north to try the coast for a few hours to end the trip.

One highlight of the day was the fresh yellowfin tuna dinner by Charley and Dan that was “off the charts” and good!
Team Searcher

Hello anglers: We had a few extra hours so we stopped and fished the coast. Conditions were good with warm, clean water. We saw a sign of yellowtail up to 20 pounds and we landed a few. There was some action on big bonito that we released and a few rockfish. Since we only had a couple of hours, we didn’t have time to look around much. There might be some good yellowtail fishing in this area for the next trip.

We travelled the rest of the day, broke down the tackle and scrubbed the boat. What a great trip in all aspects–weather, fishing, and comraderie! Looking forward to having everyone back next year.

Good morning anglers: Yesterday was a great day! We turned the boat around in record time, which meant that a great job was done by everyone on our team to get it done so fast. We arrived at 5:30 am and left the dock just after 8:30 a.m.. We have a great load of bait and we cleared Point Loma at 10 am. We are headed for The Ridge with high hopes of arriving before lunch on Tuesday.
Yesterday we watched football while travelling south and it was a great day for a nap. We ended the day with a dinner of beef bourguignon, mashed potatoes, fresh green beans, fresh bread and a really special dessert in honor of Capt Ryan’s 30th birthday coming up soon. Ryan’s mother, Vicky, is a top-notch baker and we had her famous banana cream pie to top off that delicious dinner. Nice job, Vicky!

Today we will give a seminar and go over all the options for rigging. After that everyone will have the rest of the day to play with all that tackle purchased prior to the trip, and enjoy a movie afternoon, complete with gourmet popcorn and Red Vines. Trip 26 (6 day) Sep 20-25

Hello anglers: We stated our trip close to home yesterday and managed to land a few 30-pound yellowfin tuna. With only 14 anglers aboard, we were able to give everyone the attention to gear and bait, and anything else they needed!

Due to the weather forecast and a tropical depression in our southern path, we travelled west. We are at San Clemente Island today where we see a sign of the nice-ize bluefin here. One angler landed a 50 pounder this morning! The current changed up, and so the fish we are seeing isn’t biting. We’re hoping for a change with the current later today.

In the meantime we switched gears to try for some yellowtail. We have landed a few, and Dan Carrier from Irvine is pictured with crewman Ben Hart and a good size yellowtail. (Sorry, we had a transmission error with the photo!)

We travelled yesterday and will travel again all day today. We are headed to The Ridge which is a long way to go, but based on the reports from that area, we should be in for an opportunity for some good fishing. We will arrive Friday before lunch.

Today will make good use of our travel time for tackle seminars and lots of rigging-up in order to be ready for arrival to the fishing area. And of course, we’ll have more raffles and giveaways, thanks to Steve and Penn.

We have landed some nice-size bluefin tuna with high hopes of more fish throughout the rest of today. James Kim from W Rolling Hills, CA is pictured with one of his 3 bluefin tuna he landed today. In addition to Team Searcher crew, the ladies have two expert pro-staffers on board, Wendy Tochihara of Izorline and Lori Sachau ofTurner’s Outdoorsman in San Marcos, CA. Wendy and Lori have attracted the attention of so many tackle manufacturers who want to put their saltwater gear into the hands of lady anglers. Thank you to Okuma, Accurate, Seeker Rods, Pelagic Gear, Costa sunglasses, Phenix Rods, Tady lures, and so many more that we’ll highlight during the trip. Stand by for more photos of the ladies using their terrific saltwater gear!

Trip 19 (3 day) August 26-29: Lady Angler Trip, Mid-day report

Hello anglers: There’s plenty of fish around us his morning, but it has been harder to get a bite. That seems to be the same story all season! We keep working at it though. For our efforts, we have landed some nice bluefin and yellowfin again. A live sardine and 30 pound, with 30 pound fluorocarbon and a #2 hook seems to work the best today.

Hello anglers, We had a good day today! There is a lot of fish around, but we had to work hard for every bite. One method that worked was 25-30 pound mono with flourocarbon, and a # 2 hook with a live sardine. Jackie P from Florida is pictured with her nice-size bluefin tuna, and Capt Art who had the assist. Jackie's got a bluefin tuna AND a new pair of lady boots! Thank you Xtratuf! Hello anglers! We have a few bluefin and yellowfin tuna aboard this morning already. We can see fish on the surface and on the sonar, so we are hopeful that the fish continue to bite. For that she wins the Okuma rod!  In addition, each lady angler got to select a pair of Costa sunglasses, which are perfect for saltwater anglers! Thank you to Okuma and Costafor those generous donations, and keeping ladies on the water.costa Our second jackpot collected $430 and will be awarded to “Sportswoman” of the trip to use in credit towards a Searcher Sportfishing trip in 2017. The money will be matched by Team Searcher and donated to the American Heart Association’s “GO RED FOR WOMEN” campaign, which educates women about heart health and disease prevention. Trip 17 (1.5 day) Day’s end report

Hello Anglers,

We found some fish to LOOK AT this afternoon. In fact, there were multiple areas of Yellowfin Tuna around. The fish are 12-20 pound class. Unfortunately not many of these Tuna were hungry for what we had to offer. We had some chances at them, and some of our first-time anglers landed a fish, so that is always a plus.

Crewman Ben Hart is pictured with Grant Cramer with a yellowfin tuna that he landed on one of our “Hook and Hand” outfits supplied by Accurate Products and Seeker Rods. This is Grant’s first yellowfin tuna. He was grateful for the hand-off!

We had great weather and a nice group of people with us.

Trip 17 (1.5 day) Aug 22-24, 2016 Mid-day report

Hello anglers,

We decided to try for the better-size fish (tuna) to start the day. We saw plenty of fish before daylight, after daylight, and through lunch time. We drifted for several hours with tuna around and even under the boat. We tried all methods from flat-fall lures, live sardines with and without weights, with a helium balloon, and with a kite. Nothing! We didn’t land a fish. Some days are like that….

We are currently relocating to another area where there are reports of smaller Yellowfin tuna being caught. We are hoping for some action this afternoon. We will have plenty of time to catch some fish. Wish us luck!

Lunch was great with Yellowtail melts and pasta salad, The weather is awesome, with sunny skies and calm seas.

Trip 16 (3 day) Aug 19-22 Capt Potatohead Memorial Mid-day Report

Hello anglers,
We had a few good-size bluefin tuna bite this afternoon and one good-size yellowfin tuna. For part of the day, the method of choice was a flat-fall lure and 50-pound mono. During the other half of the day,  we found 50-pound mono, 50-pound fluorocarbon and a 3/0 circle hook were the successful set-ups. We also captured two fish on the kite.
This afternoon’s photo is Bob Bower and his 70-pound bluefin tuna. Bob got to land his on one of the boat’s kite rigs. It sure makes it easier with 80-pound test!

We will take an “E for effort” on this trip with not much action and poor timing. But we had lots of laughs, good times and plenty of raffle prizes. John Englehart won “Sportsperson of the Trip” and receives $680 towards next year’s trip. The runner up Is Jerry Harr. Jerry wins a $100 gift certificate from Aftco tackle.

Thanks to all the sponsors for this trip. Dick would be so pleased. Check the photo album on the website in a few days for all the funny high-jinks on board, and the total amount of funds donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN) Dick’s honor.

Trip 15 (5 day) Aug 17 Mid-day Report (updated)

Howdy anglers: We’ve had a fantastic morning here fishing for Yellowtail.! The best methods were yo-yo and fly lining a Sardine. The weather is superb and we’re hoping for a little more action before we start heading north, looking for some tuna or Dorado. Here is a sample of our Yellowtail caught by Ray Daniels.

Anglers are eating well, a delicious Swordfish dinner last night and we think there’s fresh Yellowtail in the forecast!

The weather is beautiful and there will be updates later today and in the coming days. They plan to look around for other species to catch.

Searcher office crew

Howdy anglers: Not much action to report this afternoon after we went offshore looking for tuna. We’re moving up the line to be in a zone that has had some tuna. We’re hoping that they are hungry and plentiful. The weather is still nice and we’re enjoying that. Wish us luck to find those elusive fish. Here is another nice yellow from this morning with deckhand Ryan (R2) and Jack Rauch.
